REMEMBERING WHY WE STARTED
DO YOU REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED IN THE HOME SELLING PROFESSION?
PLEASE LET ME SHARE WITH YOU WHY I STARTED IN THIS PROFESSION.. The story begins about 47 years ago.
I was working as a manager of a “BIG BOX” retailer at that time. Previously, after graduating from college, I had been a middle school teacher for 6 years. I loved working with young people, but I was offered a new challenging opportunity as a retail manager in a fast-growing company. So, I decided to give retail management a try. I thought that it did not work out, I could go back to teaching. I did have previous retail experience; I had worked in my dad’s small grocery store during my middle and high school years. When I graduated from high school, However, my dad decided to sell his store. He entered the real estate profession, selling homes.
During the years while I was teaching and working as a retail manager, my dad would often tell me that I should get into real estate, and selling homes. My answer was always the same: I would say that I could not “sell” someone a house! “WHY”, HE WOULD ASK. I would respond that I did not think I would make a good salesperson because I was thinking of the stereotype “SALESPERSON” as one who would try to trick people into buying something just to get a sale. They would use scripted arguments or other “SALES GIMMICKS’ on why a person should buy something, whether it was in their best interest or not!
AND, MY DAD’S ANSWER, ALWAYS THE SAME: “DON’T THINK OF HOME SELLING THAT WAY! THINK OF IT AS HELPING PEOPLE AND MAKING NEW FRIENDS!”
After about 6 years in retail management, my hard work and experience created new opportunities for me within the fast-growing company. I enjoyed my work, and the income was great. The new opportunities, however, meant possibly work-related travel and days away from home. We had two young boys, and I really didn’t want to spend days away from home because of my work.
AND SO, AFTER 12 years of working in two different professions, both of which I enjoyed greatly, I decided to “try” a third profession: “residential real estate, “SELLING HOUSES”. After all, I reasoned, if I didn’t like real estate, I could always take on the challenge of a 4 th profession THINKING ABOUT MY DAD’S PHILOSOPHY OF SELLING HOMES: “HELPING PEOPLE AND MAKING NEW FRIENDS”, I REASONED THAT IF SELLING HOMES WAS ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE AND MAKING NEW FRIENDS, I COULD DO THAT! After all, as a teacher. I enjoyed getting to know new kids every year and helping them through the school year. As a retail manager, I enjoyed helping people become successful at their work and have made many long-term meaningful relationships.
“WELL,”, ………………. You ask, “HOW DID THAT WORK OUT?”
NOW, 47 YEARS LATER, I AM STILL HELPING PEOPLE AND MAKING NEW Friends! EVERY DAY I AM GRATEFUL TO BE ABLE TO HELP PEOPLE THROUGH ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT AND STRESSFUL PERIODS IN THEIR LIVES! I HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO BE ABLE TO ALIGN MY LIFE VALUES WITH MY CAREER VALUES TO ENJOY A MUCH MORE MEANINGFUL CAREER AND LIFE! THANK YOU, DAD, YOU WERE RIGHT! I AM GRATEFUL FOR THAT!

Perhaps it was because you saw the huge commissions earned by agents for what appeared to be a quite simple process of selling a home.
